Sclerotherapy

A special chemical is injected into the vein interior causing it to become inflamed and eventually to close up. Other veins then take over its work. This may bring only temporary success and with treatment of the Greater Saphenous Vein the rate of non-closure after one year may be as high as 40%. This technique is most effective on smaller veins, less than 1-2mm in diameter.

Ligation And Stripping?

This is a surgical procedure used to close off and remove underlying faulty veins, such as the Greater Saphenous Vein. Under general anesthesia, the vein is tied off and all or part of it is stripped out. The leg is bandaged after the surgery but swelling and bruising may last 4-8 weeks. This is the current treatment of choice for patients with varicose veins caused by Greater Saphenous Vein incompetence.
